He discusses a wide range of built projects, including one of the first ecological high-rises, the RWE Tower in the center of Essen as well as 1 Bligh, situated in the historical part of the financial district in Sydney, an award-winning project which set new standards regarding social, cultural, urban-planning, and sustainability. The future for most human beings will take place in cities. The reasons for this are multifaceted: geographical, ecological, and economical. The densification of cities is one of the architect’s major tasks and challenges.

Foster + Partners on Sustainability in their Projects

Sustainability has been a central theme of Foster + Partners’ work for more than 40 years,with buildings like the Reichstag in Berlin (1992-99) and Commerzbank Headquarters in Frankfurt (1991-1997). Most recently, the design of Masdar, a 1,483-acre, carbon-neutral, zero-waste planned community in Abu Dhabi shows how holistic environmental thinking is now being applied at an urban scale. David Nelson presented the Masdar scheme, alongside a number of other sustainable planning projects, which reflect the practice’s commitment to designing for a sustainable future.
