Already a hundred years ago, the idea of founding an architecture museum in Germany existed: The efforts of architecture and engineering associations before the First World War and the Frankfurt city planning officer Ernst May initially failed in the early 1920s. It was not until the end of the 1970s, when the plans for Frankfurt's Museumsufer took shape under Hilmar Hoffmann (SPD) and Lord Mayor Walter Wallmann (CDU), that the idea of a German Architecture Museum was taken up. The art and architecture historian Heinrich Klotz acted as an advisor. On June 1, 1984, the DAM was opened with the exhibition "The Revision of Modernism."
